Day at Tunnels

Yesterday early morning we drove to Haena Beach Park and hiked back to Tunnels....even then the tiny Tunnels parking spot was full. No problem...we were planning to take the nice beach walk. It was a glorious day-one of the nicest so far on this trip. We each were able to snorkel twice and each time saw different fish. This we decided was due to the incoming tide.  It was a perfect day fro snorkeling

More beautiful views of Bali Hai Mtn from  this lovely beach.

Visit to Limahuli Gardens

This amazing preserve is part of the National Botanical Trust. it is almost at the end of the road where the Kalalau Trail begins into the Na Pali Cliff region. It is the site of a thousand year old settlement, a restored native forest and beautiful views of the ocean. It is bordered by Makana Mtn aka Bali Hai Mtn ( which BTW we see in our daily view from Pali Ke Kua). After 2 days of pouring rain we decided to go to Limahuli. The weather cooperated and we had a lovely while at times misty day.

Fun day at Hanalei Bay Beach

Decided to take our walk by going from one end to the other of this beautiful beach.....actually 4 separate state beaches...about 1.5 miles long. Along the way we ran into the Irons Bros. Pine Tree (surfing) Classic. The contestants were kids probably under 12 accompanied by their families. They were offering free hamburgers/hot dogs so we stopped for lunch and to watch the fun. There were lots of heats but there were so many spectators in the water it was hard to identify the contestants.

On the way home we stopped for shave ice (not shaved ice or snow cones). The ice is shaved off a block of ice with a very sharp rotating blade). It is served over a scoop of ice cream topped with a medley of fruit syrup. Al chose Hanalei Sunrise----mango, orange + pineapple. We shared one over macadamia nut ice cream.

Final stop Hanalei Dolphin for opakapaka and a sushi roll for dinner.

Sunset at Pali Ke Kua

We quickly settled in having been here many times before. Al made a batch of Mai Tais....having perfected the recipe from Jim Fuglestad via Matt on this past rainy weekend! It was a gorgeous sunset---different from other trips. In the Fall the sun sets over the Pali but on Spring evening it sets over the ocean.

Dinner and Sunset at the Beach House

(Margie arriving at Beach House wearing scarf Brooks brought back for her from China)

Al made our reservation for tonite weeks ago and after the last few days of rain and low clouds we did not expect the glorious sunset which we had tonite.

Niihau Island

Finally a lovely late afternoon walk with views of Niihau, aka the forbidden island, off the W coast of Kauai. Only about 100 Hawaiians live there. They make the highly prized and

beautiful shell necklaces from very tiny, colorful shells which they find on their beaches. Margie is fortunate to have several and she is wearing one in this picture....it is a little hard to see!

St. Paul's...the Episcopal Church of West Kauai

Right around the corner we found this wonderful little church where we were warmly greeted by Pastor Jerrie and her husband. She is a supply priest and they come here for 3 months every year from TN.

This picture makes the church look much bigger than it actually is. Very simple and very lovely. Just a few at the 8am service and we were made to feel very welcome. It was the monthly "squirmer" service! We assured them that with 8 grands we are very comfortable with squirmers!

Rainy Day on Kauai

No sitting in the sun today! Pic doesn't really show how hard it is raining.

Trip to Ishihara Market

Nasty rainy day so we decided between showers to run to Wiamea for local farmed shrimp and plate lunches at Isihara, the local Japanese Mkt.

Friday Night at Hanapepe

We have often heard that this is the place to go on Friday night on Kauai. So this was one of the venues we wanted to check out while staying in West Kauai. Hanapepe is an historic town and little galleries and shops open on Friday along with street music. A must is dinner at the Hanapepe Cafe. The cafe is no longer open....the owner took ill...and the street fair was so so! But we checked it out and had a good time.

Swinging Bridge over Hanapepe River.

Came home and cooked our own dinner in our cozy cottage! (Heavy rain expected but today only had
low clouds and light showers)
