A day at Fakarava, Tuamotus

This is a beautiful atoll where we stopped for a day on our way to the Marquesas Islands.  It was formed long ago by a volcano.  Today all that remains is a very large (many kilometers) rectangular lagoon.   We entered through an opening in north and anchored for a day and spent the day in the village of Rotoava. We walked along the shore for several miles, passing a grocery store, the local city hall (aka Marie), a beautiful church and many little modest but comfortable homes.  Since the atoll is flat many bike while others drove trucks.  The day was bright, sunny and very hot.

This is a lovely Catholic Church which we pasted.  From the ceiling are large lantern like structures made of shells along with strings of shells leading from each "lantern".  (They were not really lights.)
