A few days at The Intercontinental Tahiti

Our first few days in French Polynesia are being spent at the Intercontinental Hotel Tahiti.  It is just a few kilometers from the international airport but aside from an occasional plane overhead this location seems worlds away from the rest of the world.  We don't have one of the beautiful huts over the water--that will be at the end of our trip in Bora Bora--but we have a wonderful ground level, recently redone rooms with a garden view but also a view of the lagoon and a nice patio.
There are two beautiful fresh water pools at the water's edge and one could also swim directly in the lagoon but we have not as yet done that.  The hotel seems quiet and we think this is approaching the low season.  We have had rain and today much rain.  It is warm and sitting under a grass shelter one stays dry!

Our first night there was a Polynesian Buffet and a performance by
dancers in the style of the Marquesas.  There was much chanting
and beating of drums.

The Polynesian Buffet was very seafood and fruit oriented.  Lots of coconut related items including sauces, dishes, rice and garnishes.  Much raw local fish including shrimp but not prepared in the Asian style.  Instead it often includes sliced cucumber and tomato with a not spicy sauce.  None of the food we ate was spicy.  The local fish is either from the lagoon or the ocean.  (Last night we had Emperor fish from the lagoon, a mild white fish with a coconut sauce.)  There was also piglet, ribs, lamb and a little beef.  Desserts were typical hotel fare but included many citrus, guava, papaya tarts and treats.

This is a partial view from main reception.  The hotel is lovely.
