The Marche’ de Pape’ete occupies and entire block in the center of town. Almost everything conceivable is for sale including flowers, some meat, a lot of fish, vegetables, fruit, clothing especially pareu (sarongs), shells, pearls. We had learned at the hotel that on the islands tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, green onion, pumpkin are grown. For some reason yellow onion must be imported. Fruits locally grown include pineapple, coconut, orange, lemon, starfruit, logan, melon and watermelon. The market was crowded with tourists like ourselves and it seemed very little was being purchased! (Reminded us of when the cruise ship passengers hit our Pike Place Market!)
