Reefton--a Gold MiningTown

We drove up the Grey Valley to the town of Reefton, a mining boom town in the late 19th century. It's other claim to fame was that it was the first place in the Southern Hemisphere to get electric lights. The current population is 1000.
First stop Bob said was to see "the boys!"

We were treated to a cup of Billy Tea and scones made in the fire place---all this reminiscent of a miner's life.

The tea was brewed with tea leaves and sprigs of manuka, a tree found all over the west coast.
(BTW Manuka honey is very expensive and purported to cure all sorts of ailments.)

Scones were served with the tea. Both tasted great on a damp rainy morning.
