Several days ago while in Muscat we took a tour to see a castle. Castle was ok but the stop in a smallish town to visit a local fish market was more interesting. The fishermen work at night and bring their catch to this local market early morning. Some fish is butchered and sold by the piece but much of it is auctioned. (See other post!) I was especially attracted to this long, skinny fish which turns out to be a barracuda. Different in size from the barracuda we are familiar with, it could be identified by its teeth. Its jaw was bigger than my hand. Coincidentally we had grilled barracuda offered for lunch the next day which we both order and thought to be delicious. The chef does an amazing job of sourcing local fish. We try it all and it is well prepared (not over cooked!) and always t!asty. I certainly hope our chef was nor sourcing from this local market, however. There was no ice in sight, it was hot and blood and guts were everywhere. BTW--no women shopping just local men in their dishdashas !
The guide said it was a lobster but the Australians thought it looked like one of the Moreton Bay "bugs" which we enjoyed in Sydney |
