This is part 2 to the previous post about the Barka Fish Market. We have seen quite a few fish markets but this one has to take a prize as most unique. The fishermen, having fished all night bring their fish to this auction in the morning. On a platform, perhaps about 15' in diameter two men sit. The one on the right is the auctioneer and the one on the left is the money man literally with a suitcase full of money!
The fisherman throws his fish on the platform. Using his long stick which is like a broom handle, the auctioneer points to the fish and in Arabic begins the auction. He continues to tap at the fish and acknowledge the bidders by pointing to them returning to tap at the fish. When he determines the buyer he points to him and taps several times at the fish. The buyer then picks up his dripping, sometimes bloody fish, while garbed in his pristine white dishdasha, pays the money and then take it to one of the fish mongers behind the auction to butcher his fish!
