Approaching the Peace Bridge

The Mubarak Peace Bridge aka the Egyptian-Japanese Friendship Bridge, Al Salam Bridge or Al Salam Peace Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the canal at El Qantara.  This bridge links Africa and Eurasia and was built with assistance from the Japanese who provided 60% of the cost.  It is 2.4 miles long and has a clearance of 230 feet.

At this time the bridge is open to traffic but until fairly recently it had been closed by the Egyptians who feared that a terrorist attack might not only damage the bridge but impede traffic in the canal below.   At other points along the canal there is a tunnel, the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, a railway bridge, the ElFerdan Railway Bridge, and numerous small ferries which connect the Sinai Peninsula with the more populated and larger land mass of Egypt.
