Ramparts Walk

We read that it is possible to walk halfway around on the wall of the old city from the Jaffa to the Lions Gate so we set out to do this. We were told that there were lots of steps and tricky passages and that we would have to pay a fee to do this! Finding where to pay the entry fee turned out to be the hardest part.
Jaffa Gate

Walking the ramparts. Last used by the Jordanian soldiers during the '67 War.

View of the new city from the ramparts.

Along the way we passed a 17th century family mosque still in use just within the wall.

Our first views of the Dome of the Rock

We passed schools and homes and garbage heaps and this lovely well tended garden.

Another spot where a wonderful at growing is built right above a huge garbage dump!

The tower is outside the wall and belongs to the Rockefeller Museum.

Just after we left this spot we heard sounds like crumbling walls. We were naive. Turns out some kids about 12 or 14 were throwing rocks at us! We waved and they started screaming "Money!" We left that area on a hurry!
Next we crossed the old city through the Arab and Christian Quarters on our way back to the Jaffa Gate. We got very lost!

30,000 Arabs live in the old city and only 3,500 Jews--mostly Ultra Orthodox.

These Arab women are buying bread. Each loaf is a oval and they would buy 4 or 5 loaves. If you look between the women you can see the loaves.
