The Duomo

On our first morning we visited the Duomo. It was a bright sunny day with a hint of Fall in the air. First we entered the Duomo and for the first time in all our travels got briefly separated from each other. Each thought the other had left the other behind!!!! Even early October Florence is teaming with tourists! It was very crowded.

The Brunelleschi dome was an architectural feat of its time.

We climbed almost to the top of the Giotto bell tower where the views were great.

We also visited the Baptistry. Aside from all the glorious art within, Al was excited to see the inside as this was an important location in the latest Dan Brown novel which he has been reading!
He did take time to photograph the amazing mosaics in the dome.

The Baptistry is also the location of the marvelous Ghiberti doors which now are actually copies. We saw the originals which are now in the Duomo Museum.

Copies of these doors are also found at the entrance to Grace Cathedral in SFO.
Also in the Duomo Museum is Michelangelo's Florence Pieta which is a very moving piece.
