The flight from Rome to Tel Aviv took 3 hrs. We flew El Al and our experience began as soon as we entered the terminal. Guards stood above as we waited in line for our security interview. A most pleasant gal introduced herself as Israeli security and asked us a series of questions....have you received any gifts?......do you belong to a Jewish community in America?....when I said we were Christian she crossed out the H on our label and marked something else! She wished us a good trip! Next a line for checkin, then Italian security where they didn't like Al's camera and my knitting needles! And finally EU passport control. All went well but still took over one hour! Then a bus to our departing terminal and yet another bus to our plane! Finally we were off. We were served a pretty decent meal which must have been Kosher and was definitely all dairy.
We were met by our driver and it took not quite an hour to reach Jerusalem. As we approached the city we went through a check point and the rest of the way was on a secure highway with high walls and barbed wire!
Our hotel, the David Citadel Hotel, is right outside the Jaffa Gate. It is a very lovely beautiful new hotel and comparable to a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton. We will enjoy our 6 day stay here!
As soon as we arrived we hopped in a taxi and went to evensong (actually evening prayer!) at St.
George's Cathedral.
